Usually a support role to the Product Manager, the Business Architect is responsible for architecting business processes. Whether to improve or re-engineer existing models, or define new ways of doing business, this role requires an ability to understand the fundamentals of how people actually conduct business. This position is most often confused with those of the system, database, and/or software architect who are consumers of Business Architect services. Some of the responsibilities of a Business Architect include:
Although an individual project budget may not allow for a Product Manager, the services of a true Business Architect will not only yield savings on initial development costs, but will lay the groundwork for future growth. This is not a role which can be successfully delegated to the Business Analyst and/or software developers. Although domain expertise with the type of business being architected is advantageous, the methodologies of the professional allow for predictable and valuable results no matter what their initial understanding of the requirements may be. Software developers do not possess the same skills or experience–and should not be expected to perform adequately. It is essential to balance the budget between business analysis/architecture and software development. If you are launching into development without the benefit of a true Business Architect, you should seriously consider the high multiplier of value that can be achieved through the reallocation of development resources to the fulfillment of this role.
